Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Your gift this season will help New Haven Legal Assistance continue to provide high quality legal services to families, children, persons with disabilities, and victims of crimes. Through individual representation, policy advocacy, systemic litigation and community education, LAA’s dedicated staff works tirelessly to address the needs of the New Haven County and Naugatuck Valley community. We continue to innovate new ways to deliver our services, in response to those needs. Here are two examples of how our legal representation provides our clients with stability.

  • We represented a middle school student facing expulsion from school for the rest of the year. The school wanted to remove our client for behavior connected to his disability that was essentially out of his control. LAA advocated for the school to provide him with additional special education supports in lieu of expulsion. The school placed the student in an intensive all day behavioral school where he was successful. After completing this program, a private school accepted him with a scholarship!
  • We represented a client from Jamaica seeking asylum. Having been the victim of targeted violence in Jamaica because of his sexual orientation, he did not want to return and sought asylum in the United States. We successfully advocated for asylum based on his well-founded fear of returning to Jamaica. He is now on a path to citizenship!
